A great patch should survive many washes. With a few simple habits you can keep colors bright and edges intact for years.
General care for most patches
- Turn the garment inside out.
- Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water.
- Use mild detergent and skip bleach.
- Air-dry or use low heat.
- Do not iron directly on the patch — use a cloth barrier.
| Patch type | Washing | Drying | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|

| Printed | Gentle cycle, inside out | Air-dry | Hot water, harsh scrubbing |
| PVC | Wipe with damp cloth | Air-dry | Ironing, high heat |
| Leather | Wipe gently | Air-dry | Soaking, high heat |
| Chenille | Hand wash cool water | Air-dry flat | Machine agitation, direct heat |
Embroidered and woven patches
These are the most washable. Follow the general steps above. If a thread comes loose, snip it carefully rather than pulling.
PVC patches
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
- Do not iron — heat can warp PVC.
- Remove Velcro®-backed patches before washing the garment when possible.
Leather patches
- Avoid soaking.
- Wipe gently with a damp cloth.
- Keep away from high heat.
- Condition genuine leather occasionally.
Iron-on patches
Wait at least 24 hours after applying before washing. Add a few stitches around the edge for items that are washed often. See how to iron on a patch.
Stain and storage tips
- Spot-clean stains gently.
- Store patches flat, away from direct heat.
- Keep Velcro® hooks clean of lint.
Extending the life of your patches
- Wash patched garments less often when possible.
- Use a mesh laundry bag for smaller items.
- Fasten Velcro® closures to avoid snagging other clothes.
- Repair loose stitches promptly.
Stain removal tips
- Blot fresh stains — do not rub.
- Use a small amount of mild soap and cool water.
- Rinse with a damp cloth.
- Air-dry away from direct heat.
Ironing garments with patches
Iron garments inside out. Place a pressing cloth between the iron and the patch if you must press near it, and never press directly on PVC or leather.
Washing checklist for patched garments
- Check the garment’s care label first.
- Turn the garment inside out.
- Close zippers and Velcro®.
- Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water.
- Use mild detergent and skip bleach.
- Air-dry or use low heat.
What to do when a patch gets damaged
- Loose thread: trim with small scissors; do not pull.
- Lifted edge (iron-on): re-press with a cloth or stitch the edge.
- Torn stitching: re-stitch with matching thread.
- Stained patch: spot-clean gently with mild soap.
Long-term storage of patches and patched garments
Store patched garments on padded hangers or folded flat. Keep loose patches flat in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid stacking heavy items on top, which can flatten raised embroidery or crush chenille pile.
