Artwork File Guide for Custom Patches: Vector, PNG, JPG and More

First-hand production notes from live quotes in Corona, California — not a generic roundup. We ship custom patches to all 50 states.

Quick answer

GetUSAPatches accepts AI, EPS, PDF, PNG and JPG files. Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) give the cleanest results because they scale without blurring, but we can also recreate artwork from a clear photo or sketch. Send the largest, sharpest version of your logo, and list your colors and exact text.

Artwork File Guide for Custom Patches: Vector, PNG, JPG and More

Key takeaways

  • We accept AI, EPS, PDF, PNG and JPG files.
  • Vector files are ideal, but we can recreate artwork from a clear photo or sketch.
  • Send the largest, cleanest version of your logo and note the colors.

You do not need perfect files to order a custom patch, but the cleaner your artwork, the faster and more accurate your mockup will be. Here is what to send and why it matters.

Vector vs. raster: what is the difference?

Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) are made of shapes and lines that scale without losing quality. Raster files (PNG, JPG) are made of pixels, so they blur if enlarged. Both can be used, but vector gives the cleanest edges for digitizing.

File types we accept

  • AI, EPS, PDF: best for logos and line art.
  • PNG: great when you have a transparent background.
  • JPG: fine for simple designs if the image is large and sharp.
  • Photos or sketches: we can recreate the design if the image is clear.
Format Type Best for Tip
AI Vector Logos and line art Convert text to outlines
EPS Vector Logos and line art Include fonts or outline text
PDF Vector or raster Logos, proofs Save as vector when possible
PNG Raster Transparent-background logos Send high resolution
JPG Raster Photos and simple art Avoid heavy compression

Resolution and size

For raster files, send the largest version you have. As a rule of thumb, an image about 300 pixels per inch at the finished patch size is comfortable. A tiny web-sized logo can be recreated, but the result depends on the clarity of the original.

Fonts and text

  • Convert text to outlines in vector files, or tell us the font name.
  • Include the exact spelling of names and slogans.
  • Keep lettering large enough for the finished size — about 1/8 inch minimum for embroidery.

Colors

Tell us the thread or material colors you want. If you have brand colors, send Pantone or hex values. Read more in our thread color matching guide.

What we do with your file

  1. Review the artwork for stitch or weave limits.
  2. Digitize it for embroidery or prepare it for weaving, printing or molding.
  3. Send a free digital mockup showing size, colors and details.
  4. Adjust based on your feedback before production.

Artwork checklist before you upload

  1. Export the largest version you have (vector if possible).
  2. Convert text to outlines or note the font name.
  3. List every color (Pantone or hex values if you have them).
  4. State the finished size and placement.
  5. Note the backing you prefer.
  6. Add any spelling or wording that must be exact.
  • Send it anyway — we can often recreate it cleanly.
  • Look for older files: business cards, brand guides, signage vendors or your designer.
  • Send a photo of the logo on a flat surface, straight-on, in good light.
  • Tell us what matters most (colors, text, shapes) so we can prioritize.

Why a “clean” file gets a better mockup

Sharp edges and clear color separation let our digitizers choose stitch directions and densities that follow your design, rather than guessing at blurry edges. Clean files also reduce revision rounds, which speeds up approval and production.

Raster vs. vector: a plain-English explanation

Vector graphics are built from mathematical shapes, so they can be scaled up or down without losing sharpness — ideal for logos. Raster graphics (like photos) are built from pixels; enlarge them too much and edges blur. For embroidery, clear shapes and color areas matter more than photographic detail, which is why vector logos are the gold standard.

How to export a clean file from common tools

  • Adobe Illustrator: Save as AI or export EPS/PDF; outline text first.
  • Canva: download as PNG with transparent background at the highest quality.
  • Photoshop: flatten and save as PNG or high-quality JPG at final size.
  • Screenshots: avoid if possible; find the original file.
  • Phone photos: take straight-on, in even light, without shadows.

Protecting your artwork and rights

Only submit artwork you own or have permission to use. If your design includes third-party logos, licensed characters or insignia, confirm you have the right to reproduce them. When in doubt, ask us — we will tell you what we need before starting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send a photo of my logo?

Yes. If the photo is clear, we can recreate the design as a patch-ready file.

Do you charge for digitizing?

A free digital mockup is provided with your order request so you can review the design before production.

What if my file is low resolution?

Send it anyway. We will let you know if we need a clearer version.

Do I need to convert text to outlines?

It helps. Outlined text prevents font substitution. If you cannot outline it, tell us the font name.

Can you use a screenshot as artwork?

A clear, high-resolution screenshot can work, but the original file is better. If it is small or blurry, we may ask for a clearer version.

Will my artwork be shared?

We use your artwork only to produce your order. Our Privacy Policy page explains how information you send us is handled.
